Sexual orientation discrimination
December 12, 2019Autumn St. George, 41, worked as a middle school physical education teacher and athletic director in the Sequim School District. She reportedly posted an online ad seeking friendship, which a colleague allegedly saw. Later, a school counselor allegedly asked some of St. George’s other colleagues whether she was a lesbian and interviewed students about whether St. George had had an inappropriate relationship with them. Additionally, as part of an investigation, an outside attorney asked St. George, who is bisexual, whether she was “out.”
St. George sued the school district, alleging harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation. Suit did not claim past medical expenses.
The parties settled for $850,000. As part of the settlement, St. George will leave her job, at which she had earned approximately $55,000 annually.
