Finding the Right Fit

April 2018

High employee turnover increases employee anxiety and reduces efficiency. Every firm should aspire to a low turnover rate and strong employee satisfaction. Here are some key principles for hiring—and keeping—valuable employees.

Create a detailed ad with clear expectations. Our ads are long, but it is worth the cost. They define the job’s parameters, the personality type required for the position, the necessary skills, and—most important—what we are not looking for in a particular candidate. We provide detailed instructions on how to submit an application, including whom to send it to and what must accompany it. If the candidate cannot follow the instructions, we know the candidate is not right for the job.

Evaluation begins with the interview and continues after hiring. We conduct a detailed interview of each prospective employee, having the candidate meet with the office administrator and other key staff. Some entry-level candidates also take a series of tests for grammar, punctuation, writing, secretarial skills, and—depending on the position—a personality diagnostic test. After hiring, we conduct a 90-day review to give and receive feedback. This system aids communication, which improves morale.

Adhere to a clear mission statement. Our mission statement is posted in our office and is regularly referred to during meetings and at firm events. It reminds us of how we want to serve our colleagues, clients, and community. It is always obvious to us if an employee is “buying in” to our mission statement, even at the initial interview. Your employees should know that they are part of a team with a common goal—and that they are serving the firm’s mission, not merely the needs of their individual boss or supervisor. This is far more empowering.

There are many elements to building your team, but you can reduce turnover by establishing systems that help you hire the right people and by creating a culture that ensures they want to stay.
