Negligent security in nightclub parking area

April 23, 2020

As Dezje Williams, 25, was walking to his car after leaving The Barn—a Sanford, Fla., nightclub—an assailant shot him in the back, chest, face, and neck. He was hospitalized for one week and now has scarring and breathing issues. Additionally, he experiences emotional distress over the incident and still has a bullet lodged in his sinus cavity.

Williams sued Silver Saddle Entertainment Inc., the operator of The Barn, and Armor Bearer Security & Protection LLC, the club’s security provider, alleging negligent security. Among other claims, the plaintiff asserted that the club’s parking area had no security cameras and minimal lighting. Suit did not claim lost income or medical expenses.

The jury awarded $5 million, apportioning liability at 75% to Silver Saddle and 25% to Armor Bearer.
