As part of a family separation policy designed by the Trump administration, the four Does, who were between the ages of four and 13, were forcibly separated from their parents when they entered the United States together. The parents and children, all Guatemalan and Honduran nationals, were not allowed to communicate in any way for weeks or months, and the children did not understand what was happening to them.

The Does and their parents sued the United States, alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, negligent supervision, abuse of process, and loss of consortium.

The parties settled for $780,000.
