Sexual abuse by stepfather

December 2024

Doe, who had high-functioning autism and dyslexia, was sexually abused by her stepfather when she was in high school. Because he had warned Doe that the whole family would be destroyed if she did not keep their secret, she did not tell anyone about the abuse for two years. Doe’s mother later confronted the stepfather, who allegedly admitted he had touched Doe inappropriately. He subsequently pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault and battery. As a result of her experience, Doe developed PTSD, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and suicidal ideation.

Doe sued her stepfather, alleging liability for sexual abuse.

The jury awarded over $28.37 million.

Citation: Doe v. Puckett, CL21001618-00 (Va. Cir. Ct. Augusta Cnty. Jan. 26, 2024).

Plaintiff counsel: J. Michael Sharman, Culpeper, Va.
