Negligent use of vascular closure device
January 23, 2024Zandra Chapman, 51, underwent a cardiac catheterization performed by cardiologist Shashi Ahuja. Ahuja told Chapman that a nurse would apply pressure to the catheter insertion site at the end of the procedure to help the hole in the artery clot over and seal; however, after completing the catheterization, Ahuja applied a MynxGrip vascular closure device, which includes a sealant, before manual pressure was applied.
Chapman developed compartment syndrome in her right calf, which led to muscle atrophy, ischemia, deformity, and foot drop. She continues to have impaired sensation in her right foot and suffers from constant swelling in her right leg.
Chapman sued Ahuja, alleging negligent use of the MynxGrip. The plaintiff asserted that the defendant’s use of the device was hurried and that he deposited a collagen-like substance into her vein, which led to blood clots. Finally, the plaintiff argued that she had not consented to use of the MynxGrip.
The jury awarded over $2.6 million. The parties later settled.
