Washington, DC—The following is a statement from American Association for Justice (AAJ) President Elise Sanguinetti regarding the passing of retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

“Today we reflect on the distinguished legal career of Justice John Paul Stevens, a champion for democracy and equality for all Americans, and a dedicated public servant.

“Justice Stevens was an advocate for justice in many monumental cases. On issues important to consumers and workers from holding cigarette companies accountable, to working to increase the safety of medical devices, to confronting the spread of forced arbitration, Justice Stevens’ legacy encourages all of us in our fight to uphold the constitutional rights of all Americans.

“His jurisprudence and thoughtfulness will be an example for generations of lawyers and judges to come.”
