Washington, DC— The following is a statement from American Association for Justice President Julie Braman Kane in response to today’s hearing in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice to review the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), a widely-supported consumer law that significantly reduces the number of intrusive telemarketing calls Americans can receive.

“Ending obnoxious robocalls and texts is one issue on which most Americans can agree, which is why it’s astonishing that this committee would waste valuable time – at taxpayer expense – exploring ways to immunize corporations that harass consumers.”

“As the number of robocalls reaching Americans continues to climb, Congress should be working to protecting their constituents’ privacy by curbing aggressive, invasive marketing, not preparing to give corporations another victory on the backs of consumers.”

Consumer lawyer and AAJ member Hassan Zavareei defended the rights of consumers at the hearing, testifying that “Consumers are not clamoring for Congress to make it easier for businesses to clog their phones with text messages and robocalls. What is happening is a reaction by big business to a law that puts consumers first and places modest limits on when and how businesses can reach into our cell phones and demand our attention.”
