FDA Endorses Stricter Asbestos Testing Following AAJ’s Recommendation

January 18,2022

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice President Navan Ward regarding FDA white paper on testing methods for asbestos in cosmetic products containing talc. In March of 2020, AAJ joined with National Women’s Health Network (NWHN), and URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, as well as the Environmental Working Group to petition the FDA on behalf of 24,035 Americans asking the FDA to require cosmetic companies to use the most sensitive state-of the-art methods to test for asbestos in cosmetics:

“We are pleased to see the FDA acknowledge what many have known for years - the methods that the cosmetic industry has been using to determine if there is asbestos in their products are vastly insufficient.

At the urging of talc cancer victims, scientists and everyday Americans who use cosmetic products, the FDA working group issued scientific opinions supporting more rigorous testing for cosmetic products containing asbestos-contaminated talc. This new methodology recommended by the working group will save lives.”
