AAJ Statement on the Retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer
Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice President Navan Ward on the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer:
“Throughout Justice Breyer’s 27 year career as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, he has been a consistently fair jurist on issues related to civil justice, who famously believed that the Court ‘can and should interpret the Constitution in a way that works for the people of America today.’ With news of his retirement, we urge President Biden and the Senate to work promptly to fill this vacancy on our nation’s highest court with a strong advocate for workers and consumers across America.”
“The Supreme Court is the final stop for many Americans in their fight for justice and access to our civil courts. With cases involving critical consumer, employment, and civil rights on the line, the President and the Senate must act quickly and nominate a justice that will stand up for these rights.”
