AAJ Statement On Latest Robert Novak Column

(Washington, DC)—Contrary to Robert Novak’s 2/18/08 column, the trial bar did not lobby on the wiretapping bill or request support of either side.  Mr. Novak’s lack of fact checking cheapens the debate over our national security.

The debate over surveillance law should be centered on finding the balance between civil liberties and our nation’s national security.

To quote the Cato Institute:  “The idea that the FISA debate is about trial lawyers, rather than privacy and the Constitution, is an insult both to the hard-working lawyers at organizations like EFF [Electronic Frontier Foundation] and the ACLU, and to everyone else’s intelligence.”
